Weekend Round Up
MASTERS CROSS COUNTRY
A large group of Club Masters made the short trip to Forres for teh National Masters XC Championships. Despite the weather, the athletes “enjoyed” a cracking course and hospitality courtesy of Forres Harriers. The club were delighted to see the legendary Margaret Woodhouse take bronze in her age category and Paul Miller storm to silver in the men’s after his customary sprint start saw him lead the race for the first quarter lap. Alex Sutherland is still the fastest v65 in Scotland and Tim Kirk medalled too. Facebook has a lot of photos of the action and check out Scottish Athletics for a full report and results at - http://www.scottishathletics.org.uk/masters-xc-champs-review/
Scottish Athletics Senior Indoor Championships
Stephen Mackay and Jenny Bannerman both picked up 1500mtr bronze medals at the Scottish Athletics Senior Indoor Championships at The Emirates Arena in Glasgow where World and European 60mtr Indoor Champion Richard Kilty started his indoor title defence. Both were out of their main events but had great runs to pick up their medals with Jenny front running and Stephen coming from the back for a “his and hers” double. Well done both of you.
Club Handicap – Report by Grant Nairn
Today saw the fifth and last Club handicap of the winter season and while snow fall during the night could have proved awkward, an inspection of the course this morning showed no potential problems. Indeed, by the time the races were due to start it had warmed up (slightly!) and any remaining icy patches had melted, leaving a wet, slightly muddy, but still runnable course.
A hardy bunch of 18 girls and 10 boys turned up for this last fixture of the series, which was wide open before the start gun was fired. Full details of today’s race are attached, but the results in summary are as follows:-
Girls results
1st – Ruth Wilson
2nd – Katie Gillies
3rd – Sophie Young
Boys results
1st – Grant Nixon
2nd – Liam Daly
3rd – Lucas Cairns
Fastest laps – Girls
1st – Emily Andrew 8-36
2nd – Rebecca Johnstone 8-44
3rd – Sophie Young 8-54
Fastest laps – Boys
1st= – Ben Johnstone 7-54
1st= – Lucas Cairns 7-54
3rd – Euan Rollo 8-30
Final details and winners of the Handicap series will be announced in due course, once they have been checked and verified. Todays results are HERE - 2016-01-31 Club Handicap 5
A big well done to all the athletes who have turned out for these races over the winter. A total of 33 girls and 32 boys have turned out at one point or another which is fantastic. We’d also like to thank all the parents, families and friends for turning out to support them. Thanks too to those that helped out with the marshalling on the various courses, and with the catering back at the club-hut.
And finally, last but by no means least, a massive thank you to Mary Payne and Janis Wilby for their extremely important work at the start/finish area, performing timekeeping and recording duties. As I said after the race, while we all disappear back to the warmth (and cakes) of the club-hut after the junior races, these wonderful ladies are usually out for a further hour or more, in all weathers, to do their duty with the seniors. You are both stars, thank you!
